The wild population in Mexico is estimated at just 3000-6500 individuals and has been severely reduced through extensive trapping and habitat destruction. In the Hawaiian Islands it has become established on O'ahu and is found in the Waimano Valley, Pearl City and Mililani areas. As with any introduced species it is likely to spread and become more common, so sightings are bound to occur away from the traditional area in the next few years. The birds feed mainly on nuts, berries, buds, flowers and fruit, depending on the season and feral birds adapt to urban parkland food sources such as papaya and java plum.
