A small population of this species lives in the upper Manoa Valley rainforest at the Lyon Arboretum. The birds escaped from aviaries that were once part of a tourist attraction called Paradise Park as early as 1972. Apparently they have hybridized with another escaped Cockatoo species Cacatua alba. The Salmon-crested Cockatoo occurs naturally on several small islands in the South, Moluccas, Indonesia.
