Hungary /Austria Birding Trip Report
May 24 - Aug 02, 2006
I visited Europe from May 25 to August 3, 2006 . We went to Austria from July 18-25th and the remaining time was spent in Hungary. I observed 120 bird species and was able to photograph 116. Highlights included Great Bustard, Collared Pratincole, Stone Curlew, Eurasian Spoonbill, Hoopoe, Roller, Bee-Eater, Red-footed Falcon, Golden Oriole, Black and White storks, Black & Green Woodpeckers, Eurasian Nutcracker, Ferruginous Duck and Penduline Tit.

I spent one week each at Hortabagy NP and Kiskunsag NP, Hungary and several weeks birding in Csongrad county and in the Budapest area. In Austria ,we stayed at Dorf Gastein and visited Hohe Tauern NP, Kimml Waterfalls; Patscherkofel, Fulsek and Stubnerkogel , three alpine areas above 6,000 feet. In total, I observed and photographed birds for 204 hours during 45 of the 70 days in Europe. The weather was good with sunny conditions on 52 of the 70 days or 75% of the time. Rain occurred during 12 of the 70 days.

GENERAL COMMENTS:
The best birding locations in Hungary are within the countries National Parks especially Hortabagy. I found the road access into the bird areas limited and I recommend using a 4WD if possible. Permits are required to visit the most important areas. I recommend hiring a local guide who can help locate the birds and ensure access to the restricted zones. Gas was expensive (over $6.00 a gallon!) and the food was great.

The following species were observed at these locations:
