Red-billed Tropicbirds breed along the coasts of Central and South America. According to "Hawaiian Birdlife" by Andrew Berger, the first record for the Hawaiian Islands was an immature female collected at Nihoa Island on June 15, 1923 by Alexander Wetmore. A. Emerson collected a bird on East Island, French Frigate Shoals, in 1968. There were two sight records for Sand Island, Johnson Atoll, in 1957.
In the main Hawaiian islands the only previous record was from Kilauea Point NWR, Kauai where a single Red-billed Tropicbird resided during the Winter/Spring of 1998,1999 and 2000. At 7:45 AM on the morning of March 3, 2006 I observed a single Red-billed Tropicbird along Oahu’s southeast coastline. This is the only known record for the island of Oahu.
