A first record for Hawaii ! |
On May 25, 2012 Arleone Dibben-Young discovered an unsual Tern feeding on insects in a treatment pond at Kaunakakai, Molokai and was able to get excellent photographs as well as identifying a new species for Hawaii, a spectacular White-winged Tern.
White-winged Terns breed in western and central Europe to central Russia and southern China. They winter in central and southern Africa, Indonesia and Australia. Vagrants have been recorded in Alaska, California, Eastern USA, West Indies and New Zealand. In the Pacific, they have been recorded in Palau and as a vagrant in the Marianas Islands.
We are pleased to provide the photos above of this extremely rare Hawaiian visitor.
