A first record for Hawaii !
On September 19,2006 at 09:15, I observed a small sandpiper with a orange-reddish spot at the base of the lower mandible feeding with Sanderlings and Ruddy Turnstones in the muddy bottom of a drained shrimp pond on Oahu's north coast. I was able to take photographs of this bird. After detailed analysis and discussion the bird was identified as a White-rumped Sandpiper. Except for one hypothetical sighting in 1961, this species has never been photographed or documented in the Hawaiian Islands or anywhere else in the entire tropical Pacific region.
